A Donation that Lasts a Lifetime
The Shelter Endowment Fund is a permanently restricted fund providing critical support for pet programs, equipment, and facility needs for the City of Denton Linda McNatt Animal Care & Adoption Center in perpetuity.
Contributions to the Endowment Fund can effectively last forever, as distributions to the shelter are made from investment/interest earnings on the Fund’s accumulated donations. By generating revenue in perpetuity, the Endowment Fund helps the shelter remain state-of-the-art, funding specific needs and programs that are not included in the City budget. Your gift becomes a legacy of love that lasts a lifetime!
History
The Fund was initiated in 2016 by DASF donors Dr. Jerry and Shirley Watson in memory of their beloved adopted dog, Kandi. Their intent was to establish a permanent fund to support Denton shelter pets into the future. They generously continue to support DASF and the Fund, saving more Denton area pets.
Purpose
The Fund’s purpose is to accumulate a pool of donated funds capable of generating recurring funding to support current and future shelter needs in perpetuity. By pooling individual donations, the Fund offers DASF and shelter management greater opportunities to address significant needs, thus enhancing the beneficial impact for shelter pets.
Requests are presented by shelter management to the DASF Board and may include: adoption and medical programs, equipment, facility improvements, in-take diversion programs, or other specialty items. These requests must be important to and/or improve the welfare of pets in the shelter.
Fund Management
Cultivar Capital, a local firm experienced in investment management for nonprofits, invests the Fund’s assets in accordance with the DASF Board of Directors’ investment policy. The DASF Board is responsible for oversight of the Fund and reviews all investment decisions and results quarterly. The Fund has experienced excellent growth and provided funding for important shelter needs each year since its inception.
Distributions
Grants are made to the shelter upon evaluation and approval of the DASF Board. Reporting on the use of the grant funds is required, ensuring that all funds are used for the purpose intended in a timely manner. The endowment’s effectiveness is enhanced by pooling donations which, accumulated over time, allows it to make significant grants that make a critical impact on shelter pet welfare. Grants can be directed to those needs that impact the greatest number of pets or those that need it most.
DASF accounts for, and makes distributions in a manner consistent with the Texas Uniform Prudent Management of Institutional Funds Act, the State’s governing law for nonprofit endowment management.
Ways to Donate
There are many ways to make a donation to the endowment fund, including: cash, appreciated securities, wills and estate planning, IRA beneficiary designations, and more.
For donations other than cash, we suggest consultation with your financial advisor, attorney accountant, or broker. DASF is able to accept security donations directly into the endowment fund through our investment manager.
Cash donations may be made online by check or wire transfer. Recurring donations may also be established.
